The main gateway to Estonia for international travellers is the capital city, Tallinn (airport code: TLL). From South Africa flights to Estonia are available with either one or two connections flying via a variety of cities. One stop flights to Estonia from Johannesburg are available with South African Airways and Lufthansa, both via Frankfurt, or with KLM via Amsterdam. The Tourist Attractions of Estonia:
Estonia is growing in popularity with visitors from around the world due to its wonderful diversity of attractions on offer. This is a very beautiful country with forests and national parks in abundance. There is also an extensive coastline and many picturesque towns and villages to see.

Tallinn

Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia and is located on the northern coast. The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been wonderfully well preserved. There are cobbled streets, the old city walls and attractive buildings whilst Tallinn also has a nice number of parks to enjoy in the summer months.

Tallinn dates back to Medieval times and the old city was built between the 15th and 17th centuries. Things to see include the town hall, Raekoda, built in 1371 and the impressive Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Up on the hill is Toompea which is the site of a Danish castle dating from 1219 when the city was founded.

In the newer city there are also a great many interesting attractions. These include the Tallinn TV Tower which has an observation deck from which you get excellent views of the city and beyond, and the Russian summer residence, Kadriorg Palace. Within a few kilometres from the city centre there are many more places to visit – the Holy Birgitta Monastery is interesting whilst the Jagala Falls (within a 30 minute drive) are the largest waterfalls in Estonia. Close to Tallinn there are beaches to enjoy during the summer months.

National Parks of Estonia

With its scenic beauty Estonia has a number of national parks. Of the five in total, two are within reach of Tallinn – Soomaa National Park and Lahemaa National Park.

Soomaa means ‘land of bogs’ in Estonian and a visit here will reveal why it’s called this! Although swimming in a bog is not usually on your list of must-do’s, this is actually a popular thing to do in Soomaa as the peat bogs are said to be very good for your skin!

Lahemaa National Park also has bogs including Viru raba which has a trail around it and a watchtower to climb. The highlights of this national park also include the forests and the coast.

Baltic Islands

Estonia has around 1,500 islands in the Baltic Sea which also make a great place to visit. The main two islands are Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. The well preserved Medieval castle on Hiiumaa is said to be worth the visit.

When Should You Visit?:

Estonia has a mostly temperate climate though it lies between the two zones of maritime and continental so the weather can be a little different to many temperate countries. During the summer temperatures are mild, with July being the warmest month and averaging at 16.4C. February is the coldest month with an average of -5.7C.
