The capital and largest city of Hungary, Budapest is by far the country’s most popular tourism destination, even though the rest of Hungary has some great places to see too.
Divided into Buda, the older city, and Pest, the newer city, by the River Danube, Budapest certainly has a beautiful setting and is considered by many to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Many visitors spend the majority of their time in the older city, Buda, and especially in the Castle Hill area. The main attractions on Castle Hill include the Royal Palace, where you will also find the National Gallery, and the Matthias Church, plus wonderful views from Fisherman’s Bastion. A selection of the city’s other museums are also on Castle Hill, including the Historical Museum of Budapest.
On the Pest side there are still a good many attractions too, so this shouldn’t be discounted. The impressive Parliament Building is one, as well as the Great Synagogue and the Jewish Museum, plus the St Stephen Cathedral.
Another of the popular towns in Hungary is Eger. This historic town is in the north of Hungary and features some lovely architecture. The highlight is Egri Var, the castle, which has a variety of things to see including underground passageways, an art gallery and Gothic Palace. The town also features the northernmost minaret in Europe, which also happens to be the tallest in Hungary. A symbol of the Turkish occupation in Hungary, this minaret has claustrophobic steps to the top, but the good views may be worth the climb.
Lake Balaton is one of Hungary’s top tourist destinations. This is the largest lake in Hungary, and Central Europe, and features beautiful scenery, small towns, cities, and more. Hiking in the hills above the lake is popular in the summer, as is swimming and sailing, but the area is also famous for its spas. The town of Heviz, for example, contains Hungary’s top thermal spa. The two major towns in the Lake Balaton region are Siofok and Balantonfured, both of which have their own attractions plus places to stay, restaurants, shops and more.
Other Places to Visit in Hungary
The above are just a few of the popular places to visit in Hungary. There are many other destinations to visit too, including Hortobagy National Park (just one of Hungary’s several UNESCO World Heritage Sites), Pecs – an early Christian necropolis and also a World Heritage Site; scenic caves of Aggtelek and Slovak; and numerous wine producing areas.
