|Montenegro is a very beautiful country featuring lakes, forests, rainforests, coastal scenery and attractive towns and cities. With so much contrast, Montenegro is a great destination for touring and this is the only way you can get to fully appreciate what the country has to offer.
Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro. This is a good place to start your holiday as all flights to Montenegro will arrive at the airport just outside the city so it’s worth spending several days here taking in some of the sights. These sights include the old Turkish town with its atmospheric narrow streets, mosques and more, but Podgorica has a modern side too with cosmopolitan architecture including the Millennium Bridge.
The Bay of Kotor
On the coast in the south west of Montenegro is the Bay of Kotor which features some of the country’s spectacular scenery. This bay is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe and it’s home to two towns that are losted as UNESCO Wirld Heritage Sites, Kotor and Perast.
Kotor is a beautiful town and it’s the old town that’s listed with UNESCO. This is a popular place for wandering around admiring the older buildings including Triphon Cathedral, and stopping for a coffee in one of the cafés or a meal in one of its great restaurants.
Perast is a much smaller town with a sleepy and laid back atmosphere. It’s listed with UNESCO for its natural and culture-historical importance.
National parks of Montenegro
To help protect some of Montenegro’s fantastic scenery there are five national parks in the country, all offering something a little different.
Biogradska Gora is in a mountainous region in the north east of Montenegro and features virgin forest, high mountains, glacial lakes and one of the remaining sections of rainforest in Europe. Durmitor National Park is also in a mountain part of Montenegro, and is to the north west of Biogradska Gora. As well as being a national park, Durmitor is also another of Montenegro’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites for its natural importance. It features the second largest river canyon in the world, the Tara River Canyon which is a very popular rafting destination.
Other national parks in Montenegro include the Lake Skadar National Park, Lovcen National Park, and two national parks within the Prokletije mountain range.
