| From national parks, to mountains and lakes, coastal beaches to caves and cities; Slovenia really does have a great variety of things to see and do!
Ljubljana Situated centrally within Slovenia is the country’s capital and largest city, Ljubljana. This beautiful city has plenty of attractive architecture and a romantic setting on the river Ljubljanica. Formal squares, a castle, churches, bridges, and even Roman ruins are the main attractions of this city. Piran As coastal towns go, Piran is reputed as the most beautiful in Slovenia. When you visit you’ll instantly think you’d arrived in Italy rather than Slovenia as Piran certainly has some similarities to Venice. This is because Piran was actually part of the Venetian Empire from the 13th to 18th century. Skocjan Caves Inland from Piran and the coast are the impressive Skocjan Caves. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features the largest cave hall in Europe, gorge, waterfalls and more, making this an incredibly beautiful place. Postojna Further inland still is the town of Postojna, also famous for its caves. These are somewhat more commercial than Skocjan Caves and don’t have the UNESCO listing, but are very impressive all the same. Children may find this visit more fun as it begins with a train journey into the cave system before you start a walking tour. There are 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) of underground features here, but you won’t see them all on the tour! While visiting Postojna, also stop by scenic Predjama Castle which can be toured. Lake Bled One of Slovenia’s best known destinations is Lake Bled. This beautiful lake is famous for its island with church, though this is only one attraction in the region. The lake itself is very beautiful and is surrounded by lush green mountains one of which holds Bled Castle. The region is great for visitors who enjoy the outdoors as there are plenty of hiking opportunities, swimming and adventure activities to try here. Triglav National Park Bordering on Lake Bled is the Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park. This too is perfect for hiking and enjoying the fantastic scenery including gorges, lakes and waterfalls, as well as a fortress and church. |
