Montgomery
The city of Montgomery is the capital of Alabama and the second largest city in the state. Attractions here include the Alabama State Capitol building. The one you see here now was built in 1851 after the original one was burnt down just two years after completion. This capitol building is modeled on the same architectural style as many others in the US – Greek Revival. This is a National Historic Landmark and served as the Capitol of the Confederacy in 1861. Other attractions include the Civil Rights Memorial and the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church where Martin Luther King Jr was a preacher for 6 years. The Old Alabama Town attraction near the Stat Capitol is also an interesting and fun attraction. Birmingham Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama and was named after the city of Birmingham in England. A variety of attractions here include Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Vulcan Statue and Museum, Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens and Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark. Huntsville The town of Huntsville is best known for the Marshall Space Flight Center and hence the US Space and Rocket Center Museum, though there are other things to see and do whilst you’re visiting the area too. Mountains Region Huntsville and numerous other towns and cities, are situated in the Mountain region of Alabama. This is the northern part of the state and includes parts of the Appalachian Mountains. There is some beautiful scenery in these parts of Alabama. Attractions include Natural Bridge Park which features the largest natural bridge east of the Rockies as well as an outcrop of rock with a large American Indian head. A 26 mile (41.6 km) scenic drive at the southern end of the Appalachians, called Talladega Scenic Drive is very attractive, especially in the autumn, whilst the Sipsey Wilderness features rugged landscapes, forests, canyons and waterfalls. National Sites Alabama does not have any National Parks though it does have a number of National Historic Sites, National Monuments and National Trails. These include Little River Canyon National Preserve, Trail of Tears National Historic Trail and Russell Cave National Monument. |
