Despite being only 14 kilometres (9 miles) from downtown Phoenix, Glendale is a city in its own right that plays host to several of Arizona’s professional sports teams. Glendale claims to be Arizona’s Antique Capital, and for visitors who enjoy browsing and shopping there’s a good selection of shops here.

Though Glendale is technically an independent city, it’s considered more as a suburb of Phoenix. This is because Phoenix has grown so much over the past decade that Glendale has essentially been swallowed up by it! From a tourists’ point of view you probably wouldn’t want to visit Glendale unless you happened to be in Phoenix, as the city isn’t exactly full of attractions. On the other hand, Glendale could make a nice alternative to staying in Phoenix city centre as you may find that accommodation is easier to come by and a little cheaper.
University of Phoenix Stadium Glendale does attract thousands of visitors to the University of Phoenix Stadium which is home to the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. If you’re visiting Glendale during the American Football season it’s quite an experience to watch a game as the atmosphere, particularly later on in the season is usually very special. Throughout the year the stadium plays host to other events too and is unique in the fact that the grass pitch can be rolled out of the stadium so that it doesn’t get damaged when other events are on. Historic Downtown Glendale’s historic downtown is renowned for its large number of antique shops and makes an attractive place for some window shopping, or more! There are historical and cultural facilities and events that take place here too. Deer Valley Rock Art Center The Deer Valley Rock Art Center is an outdoor attraction in Glendale that visitors of all ages will find interesting. It’s full of petroglyphs and pictographs that you can view up much closer than you usually can with these features. Cerreta Candy Factory A great attraction for chocolate lovers, the Cerreta Candy Factory is open for tours from Monday to Friday at 10am and 1pm. The half hour tours give you a behind the scenes look at the factory and is said to include all the chocolate you can eat, though presumably this is if you pay for it! Sahuaro Ranch Park As well as being a park where you’ll find typical sports fields and playgrounds, the Sahuaro Ranch Park also has a historic centre with old buildings, orchards, a barnyard and a pretty rose garden, making this an appealing place to visit to combine history with nature. |
