As mentioned above, Bakersfield isn’t exactly a tourist destination, especially considering the many cities and natural attractions that the state of California has to offer. There are some attractions in the city, but unless you were coming here for business or another specific reason there wouldn’t be much point in staying in Bakersfield for more than a day or two.
Kern County Museum The Kern County Museum is probably the most popular place to visit in Bakersfield. With a good selection of subjects covered, this makes a very good regional museum and is set over a large area, not just contained within one stuffy museum building! This makes it a popular museum with children, along with the added bonus of being able to visit the Lori Brock Children’s Discovery Center, also on site. The main museum features old buildings such as an 1800s log cabin, homes, a school, and more. The Bakersfield Speedway If you’re staying in Bakersfield on a Saturday night the Speedway makes a fun family attraction. This old racing track which is said to be the oldest in California hosts weekly races over the 1/3 mile (1/2 kilometre) track. Annual Events in Bakersfield As a fairly sizeable city Bakersfield does play host to several annual events that attract both locals and visitors to the city. Cultural events include a Scottish Games and Clan Gathering in the spring, and a Greek Festival in the summer. The Kern County Basque Festival is popular for its variety of events that includes music, dance, food and more, while for an agricultural theme there’s the Kern County Fair. There are also a lot of horse shows held throughout the year in Bakersfield. |
