Delaware is the second smallest state in the United States and is situated on the east coast and is bounded by Maryland, Pennsylvania and by New York across Delaware Bay. Though only a small state Delaware has a mix of attractions and history.

Flights to Delaware from South Africa will take you into Wilmington (airport code: ILG) located about 65 kilometers from Dover, the capital. Alternatively you may find more choice of flights if you fly into Philadelphia International Airport (airport code: PHL), about 30 minutes drive from Wilmington. International flights to Delaware are indirect and require two connections. Choose from airlines such as Continental, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, South African Airways, BMI, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, and Iberia. These airlines have varying flight routes but have will have one stop-over in their home countries.

The Tourist Attractions in Delaware:
Dover

The city of Dover is the capital of Delaware and is the second largest city in the state. It was named after Dover in Kent, England, in 1683 and has been the state capital since 1777 when it was moved from New Castle.

The Dover State Capitol building is an impressive structure, and the historical district features an assortment of attractive Colonial buildings as well as the Sewell C. Biggs Museum of American Art. Other museums include the Delaware State Museum and State Library, and the former Dover Opera House has now been renovated and converted into the Schwartz Center for the Arts.

Wilmington

Although Dover is the capital of Delaware, Wilmington is the largest city in the state and perhaps offers more for visitors. Attractions within the city include Rodney Square, a public square at the heart of the downtown area. The Riverfront has been recently re-developed and is a nice area especially in the summer due to its many restaurants, shops and bars.

Also in the city is the Brandywine Park and Brandywine Zoo, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Grand Opera House. Old Swedes Church is a historical monument, built in 1698 and the Nemours Mansion and Gardens, created in the early 1900’s is worth visiting. This is a huge house built in a French chateau style with extensive grounds – the estate is 300 acres!

Brandywine Valley

The Brandywine Valley extends from the outskirts of Wilmington all the way into Pennsylvania and is an attractive and popular tourist destination. Attractions include wine tasting in the various wineries of the area, and at the Wilmington end is the Brandywine Park which contains the zoo amongst other things.

Beaches

Delaware may not be renowned for its weather but it does have some excellent beaches. Two of the best are at Lewes, and Bethany Beach. The Lewes area has the added attraction of a nice historic district, whilst Bethany Beach (the name of the city) is a popular family resort area.
When Should You Visit?:

The climate of Delaware is moderated and influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, and the weather is renowned for being very changeable. Generally though summers are warm and humid with July being the hottest month with an average high of 30C (86F). Winters can be quite cold – January’s average high is 4C (39F).
