Idaho, as a state, is not one which often comes to the forefront of tourists minds when thinking of the USA, but when you consider the number and range of attractions in Idaho you realise this state really does have a lot to offer!
Boise Boise is the capital and the largest city of Idaho and is located in the west of the state near neighbouring Oregon. As with all state capital cities, Boise features the Idaho State Capitol Building. Like many other state capitols, this is a huge building with distinct white domed roof and Greek revival style architecture. Other places to see in Boise include Julia Davis Park which accommodates Zoo Boise, the Rose Garden, Idaho Black History Museum and Boise Art Museum. The Old Idaho State Penitentiary is a fun and interesting place to visit as you get to see the old penitentiary and sit behind bars, and for something completely different visit the World center for Birds of Prey. Idaho National Forests To the east of Boise are several of Idaho’s national forests, though there are many others across the state too. Hiking, camping and boating, as well as enjoying the flora and fauna are the main attractions here. Skiing in Idaho With many mountain ranges passing through Idaho it’s not surprising that there are also many ski resorts. One of the most famous is Sun Valley, a large ski area, plus this is also a top summer destination too for white water rafting, fishing, hiking and more. Craters of the Moon National Monument The lunar landscapes of Craters of the Moon National Monument are unusual and scenic. A 7 miles (11km) long scenic road provides one of the best ways to see this area with stops along the way where various short walks take you to the best sites. Yellowstone National Park Although the majority of the park is actually within Wyoming, a small portion is situated in Idaho too. Probably the most famous Yellowstone feature, Old Faithful, is very easy to reach from Idaho, specifically from the city of Idaho Falls. Other attractions in Yellowstone include Mammoth Hot Springs, Petrified Forest and numerous waterfalls, geysers, springs and canyons. |
