Davenport is a city in the US state of Iowa. It’s known as one of the ‘Quad Cities’, along with the neighbouring cities of Bettendorf, Moline, East Moline and Rock Island, and it’s the third largest city in Iowa. Though not well known as a tourist destination with visitors from overseas, Davenport has a fair number of tourist attractions anyway.

The Putnam Museum and IMAX Theater
Davenport offers several museums, covering different interests. There’s the Putnam Museum and IMAX Theater which, although established back in 1867 is now housed within a modern and stylish building in an area of Davenport known as Museum Hill. There are both permanent and temporary exhibitions here which are sure to be of interest to visitors of all ages. Permanent exhibits include the Hall of Mammals, and Black Earth, Big River which includes a huge aquarium. Figge Art Museum Formerly called the Davenport Museum of Art, the Figge, as it’s often called, is also housed in a modern building. The museum features over 4,000 works which cover a larger period from the 16th century to the present day. Amongst the highlights are works of Grant Wood, and Frank Lloyd Wright, and the museum is renowned for its Colonial Mexican, Haitian, and Midwestern Art. Those visitors to Davenport who are interested in art can also visit the Bucktown Fine Arts. This is situated within an historic building where there are several art studios. River Music Experience A very different museum is the River Music Experience. Not so much a museum as a venue for live performances, the River Music Experience allows visitors to experience America’s music, especially that of the Mississippi River. Parks in Davenport Davenport is an attractive city that has a number of parks enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The Riverfront area is a popular place for enjoying a riverside stroll, or a float on a boat, whilst you can go fishing along the Mississippi River from Credit Island Park. For views over the river climb to the summit of Mount Ida Park, or enjoy the paths and water features of the Vander Veer Botanical Park. |
