Eastern Kansas
Eastern Kansas is a little different to the rest of the state – it’s not as flat here and most of Kansas’s major cities are in the region. The capital city, Topeka, for example is here and sights include the Kansas State Capitol, the Kansas Historical Society and Museum, and Topeka Zoo. Eastern Kansas is also home of the historical city of Atchison and the state’s first city, Leavenworth. Leavenworth has an assortment of historic Victorian homes, plus the historic site of Fort Leavenworth and the Buffalo Soldier Monument. Western Kansas Visitors wishing to see the more rural side of Kansas should visit the Western region. There are many attractive small towns here and a lot of pioneer history. Central Kansas Central Kansas is home to the largest city in Kansas, Wichita. Here the Old Town is one of the best attractions. It’s an entertainment district with shops, restaurants and bars and a handful of museums too. Also in Wichita is the largest zoo in Kansas, and one of the largest in the country, Sedgwick County Zoo. Flint Hills The Flint Hills region is in the centre of Eastern Kansas. This is an attractive area where the hills are geologically important. Cities include Manhattan, and Eldorado where you’ll find the Scheicher County Museum. This is housed in a 1930’s built hardware store and has many interesting Old West artefacts. Southeastern Kansas Southeastern Kansas has a mix of things to see and do. Amongst these is the Little House on the Prairie. This is a replica of the house which was believed to have stood here and was lived in by the Ingalls family. There’s also a restored one room schoolhouse and old post office too, giving this a small village feel. From one house to another, the Brown Mansion in Coffeyville is an early 1900’s mansion quite different to the Little House on the Prairie as this is lavishly decorated in original period furnishings. |
