Frankfort
The capital city, but not the largest, of Kentucky is Frankfort. Attractions here include the Old State Capitol, a Greek Revival style building used as the seat of government from 1831 to 1910. A short distance away is the new State Capitol, a large foreboding Beaux Arts building and has interesting exhibits on the first floor. Frankfort has many other historic buildings too. The Old Governor’s Mansion is still in use to this day. There’s Liberty Hall, built in 1796 for the first senator of Kentucky, John Brown, as well as the Orlando Brown House built in 1835, and the Georgian Revival architecture of the Berry Hill Mansion. One final historic building of interest was designed by the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright for Reverend Jesse R. Zeigler, called the Zeigler House. Louisville Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky and is most famous for being the home of the Kentucky Derby. This is a famous horse racing even held at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. Around this time there are also numerous other events and festivals taking place in the city and if you’re interested in finding out more about the Derby, visit the Kentucky Derby Museum. Baseball fans will know of another thing which Louisville is famous for, and that’s the Louisville Slugger. This is the name give to the Official Bat of Major League Baseball. The Louisville Slugger Museum is not hard to miss as outside stands the world’s largest baseball bat! Mammoth Cave National Park The Mammoth Cave National Park contains the world’s longest known cave system spanning an incredible 360+ miles (576 km). As well as being a national park this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are several tours of the caves available for visitors, which obviously only get to cover a very small portion of the system. The caves themselves are home to over 130 species and the park as a whole is home to 1300 species of plants. Other Outdoor Attractions in Kentucky Kentucky also has a range of other outdoor attractions on offer and some great scenery to see. Parks include Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, Carter Caves State Resort Park, Greenbo State Resort Park and Natural Bridge State Park. The latter contains a fantastic 78 feet long and 65 ft high natural stone bridge. |
When Should You Visit?:
Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate though unlike some its more southern neighbours, the state does have a marked four seasons in a year. Summertime temperatures are hot and humid and winters, in comparison can be quite cold. In the summer the highest temperature is usually around 31C (87F) and the lowest average winter temperature can reach -5C (23F).
