Maine has a lot to offer tourists and is perhaps best known as being one of the New England states and for being very beautiful in the autumn (fall) when the many deciduous trees turn into stunning golden and red colours. Maine is great at other times of the year too as there are attractive cities to walk around, rugged coastlines with lighthouses to see, dense forests to explore, and lobsters to eat!
Portland Portland is the largest city in Maine, even so, the population is only around 65,000 so compared to many cities in the USA Portland is very small! This compact size makes it a really pleasant city to explore and during the summer you can enjoy the city on foot. Portland is a historic city as it was first settled in 1633 and you can find historic buildings around the city from different periods in its history. The Old Port for example, has 19th century streets around it with smart boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops, galleries and bars and is a fun place to do some window shopping! Other attractions in the city include the Portland Head Light and Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, Victoria Mansion and the Eastern and Western Promenades with great views and great houses! Augusta Augusta is the capital city of Maine and is significantly smaller than Portland with a population of less than 20,000 people. As with all state capitals, Augusta has a State Capitol Building, called Maine State House, and aside from this the two other main attractions in the city are the Maine State Museum and Old Fort Western, the oldest surviving fort in North America, built in 1754. Acadia National Park Not only is Acadia National Park the only national park in Maine, it’s the only national park in the whole New England region. The gateway to Acadia National Park is the village of Bar Harbor. Although only designated a village, Bar Harbor has many restaurants, bars and accommodations on offer because of its proximity to the park, making this a nice place to spend a few days. Acadia National Park offers beautiful coastlines, forests, geology and wildlife. There are said to be over 40 species of mammals here including black bears, deer, moose, coyote, muskrats, bobcats, porcupine, beaver, chipmunks and more. |
