Nicknamed 'America in Miniature' the state of Maryland offers visitors a great diversity of landscapes all within this relatively small state, situated in the Mid Atlantic region of the USA.

Annapolis
The capital city of Maryland is Annapolis, an attractive historic city with many old buildings dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Maryland State House is the oldest state capitol in the country which is still in use and is has also served as the Capitol for the United States for a period from 1783 to 1784. If you're interested in the historic buildings of Annapolis, visit Hammond-Harwood House or William Paca House, just two amongst a handful of houses available for tours which have been furnished and decorated in line with their period of construction. Visitors who like the water will also like Annapolis because this is the sailing capital of the United States. You can take a guided cruise or if you're an experienced sailor you may be able to rent a yacht for a period. Baltimore The largest city in Maryland is Baltimore. Much of the city's tourism revolves around the Inner Harbor which features entertainment, dining and more. The Inner harbour also has attractions like the historic USS Constellation ship, plus there's the National Aquarium, Baltimore Maritime Museum and the historic neighbourhood of Fell's Point. Chesapeake Bay By far the largest feature of Maryland is Chesapeake Bay. This is the world's third largest estuary and was famous for its abundant sea life, particularly shellfish. Over farming and pollution has led to some problems, but Chesapeake Bay is the subject of much attention to get it back to its former glory. The bay still attracts many visitors though and is lined with picturesque towns with bed and breakfasts, lots of sailing opportunities, beautiful beaches and crabbing. Parks and Scenery in Maryland Maryland has a variety of parks and great scenery to enjoy. The famous Appalachian Trail passes through Maryland and a part of this takes you up to Annapolis Rock, which is great for rock climbing enthusiasts. There's also the Catoctin Mountain Park where you can camp, hike, fish and more. Deep Creek Lake is a beautiful mountain and lake resort with spa, whilst the Patapsco Valley State Park has lots of trails and historic and natural sites of interest. Finally Great Falls on the Potomac River has spectacular scenery and features many hiking and biking trails. |
