Boston
What instantly springs to the minds of most tourists when thinking of Massachusetts is the capital and largest city of the state, Boston. Boston is a hugely popular city in terms of visitor numbers, attracting around 16 million visitors per year, and has a large number of attractions and things to see. Boston is a large city, the largest in the New England region, but if you’re only visiting for a short time you’ll want to concentrate your time in the downtown Boston area. Here you’ll find historic buildings, restaurants, bars and more. The best way to see the main attractions is to follow the ‘Freedom Trail’. This is a path which takes you to places like the Massachusetts State House, Faneuil Hall and the Benjamin Franklin Statue. Cape Cod Cape Cod is a truly beautiful part of Massachusetts. This is the peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean from the south east edge of Massachusetts and is also a highly popular tourist destination. There’s the peninsula itself with many things to see and do, plus the islands to the south, which are Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Gosnold which all have their own appeals too. There’s lots to see here but attractions which stand out include Provincetown, right at the tip of the peninsula. This is where the pilgrims first landed on arrival to the new world. There’s a Pilgrim Monument to signify this important event and the town is also popular for its many art galleries and bohemian atmosphere. Along a 40 mile (64km) stretch of Cape Cod is the Cape Cod National Seashore. This is a protected part of the Massachusetts coastline which features beaches, dunes, swamps, marshes and more along with rare species of plants and wildlife. Whale Watching The waters of Massachusetts are said to have some of the best whale watching opportunities in the world. The city of Gloucester in the north east is probably the best place to set out from and a variety of tour companies will offer whale watching tours. Massachusetts History All over the state there are opportunities to see the historical side to Massachusetts, but perhaps none better than Minute Man National Historic Park. This is run by the National Park Service and features re-enactments of historical events and more. |
