The Tourist Attractions in Michigan:
Detroit

Detroit is not the capital city of Michigan but it’s by far the largest city and is well known around the world for being the centre and birthplace of several industries. Nicknames like The Motor City and Motown give you an idea as to what Detroit was built on!

Detroit is a huge city in which you could spend weeks, but if you’re on a whirlwind tour of Michigan try to see the following places: historic buildings including the Fisher Building, the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, the Guardian Building and the historic neighbourhoods of Corktown and Woodbridge, amongst others. Important museums include the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Detroit also has three casino resorts if you fancy your chances at gambling!

Lansing

In stark contrast to Detroit is the state capital of Michigan, Lansing. This is a much smaller city with a historic downtown shopping district. Attractions include the impressive Michigan State Capitol Building, Potter Park Zoo, Lake Lansing, Historic Lansing City Market and Old Town.

Isle Royale National Park

If you’d like to get away from the cities, the best place to do so is the island national park of Isle Royale. The park is situated in the middle of Lake Superior and there are scheduled ferry services to get you there. Although open to the public, access to the national park is restricted as this is first and foremost a reserve for animals and plants, though don’t let this put you off! Camping is allowed, though all facilities are basic, but the experience is worthwhile if you get to see some of the native moose or wolf population.

National Lakeshore Areas in Michigan

In addition to the Isle Royale National Park there are two other scenic areas you may like to visit, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Pictured Rocks is on the southern shore of Lake Superior and is so called because of its naturally sculpted and coloured rock formations where you can also see picturesque waterfalls.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is on the shore of Lake Michigan and its main feature is the large dunes. You can also drive around this area for good views on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. The now defunct Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station and Maritime Museum is an interesting visit as here you’ll find workers dressed in period clothing and exhibits showing you what maritime life was like in the 1800’s.
When Should You Visit?:

In general the climate of Michigan is classed as humid continental, but the two peninsulas can have quite different weather to each other. The Lower Peninsula can be considerably warmer than the Upper Peninsula but you should expect cold, snowy winters in both regions, and warm summers.
