Minnesota is a state in the Midwest United States, and is the 12th largest state in the country. One of Minnesota’s nicknames is Land of 10,000 Lakes because there are so many lakes here. Interestingly the name ‘Minnesota’ means ‘water’ in the Native American Dakota language.

The Tourist Attractions in Minnesota:
A big attraction of Minnesota is all those waterways, and these, combined with the other natural features such as forests, wilderness areas and parks makes this an attractive state for outdoor enthusiasts to visit. Minnesota also has a good range of other attractions too though.

Twin Cities

The cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are known as the Twin Cities because of their proximity to each other and similarities. Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota whilst Saint Paul is the capital of the state.

Both cities are attractive and have a range of attractions. In Saint Paul you can visit the State Capitol building, Minnesota Museum of American Art, grand and historic mansions on Summit Avenue, the free entry Como Zoo and Marjorie McNeely Conservatory and the interesting Wabasha Street Caves.

Although Minneapolis is the larger city there’s a surprising number of open spaces to enjoy in the city. These include lakes with beaches and swimming opportunities and many trails suitable for biking and walking. This chain of lakes eventually ends in the Mississippi River where it’s called Minnehaha Falls; a name which will be familiar to Hiawatha fans! Other Minneapolis attractions include numerous museums such as the Mill City Museum and Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

Bloomington

Bloomington is a suburb of Minneapolis which is best known for its shopping opportunities because you’ll find the largest shopping mall in the USA here! The Mall of America is more than just a shopping mall as it also contains a theme park and large aquarium, and of course hundreds of shops.

Parks in Minnesota

Minnesota contains an impressive 72 State Parks, 58 State Forests and 1 National Park, plus many other areas where you can enjoy wildlife and outdoor activities. One of these areas is the Superior National Forest which contains the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, covering over a million acres and a thousand lakes. If you’ve ever wanted to try canoeing in the wilderness this is a beautiful place to do so!

Voyageurs National Park is also popular for its water based opportunities including fishing, canoeing and kayaking. There’s also camping and some historic accommodation in the park.

Minnesota has a continental climate which gives it extremes of seasons and temperatures and substantial differences from one end of the state to the other. Taking the Twin Cities as an example, the average high for July is 28C and the low is 17C. Winters can be very cold – the average high is just -6C and the average low -16C.
