International flights to Mississippi are served by two international airports: Jackson-Evers International Airport (JAN) in Jackson and Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT) in Gulfport. Flights to Mississippi from South Africa are indirect with mostly two stops. Delta Air Lines offers travellers flights to Jackson from South Africa via one stop. All other flights to Mississippi from South Africa require two stops with airlines such as South African Airways, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, BMI, and Continental Airlines.

The Tourist Attractions in Mississippi:
Jackson

Jackson is the capital and largest city of Mississippi and offers visitors historical buildings and more. Top attractions include both the Old and the New State Capitol, the impressive Mississippi Governor’s Mansion, the Eudora Welty House Museum and an assortment of other museums including the Mississippi Museum of Art, Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Manship House Museum.

Jackson is also a good choice if you want to see some of the live music which Mississippi is famous for. Bars play a whole variety of live music ranging from Blue Grass to heavy metal!

Natchez

If you’re interested in the history of Mississippi, Natchez should definitely be on your list of places to visit as this features a huge number of impressive ‘antebellum’ homes. Antebellum homes are ones which were built before the American Civil War and there are so many in Natchez because, prior to the Civil War this was a wealthy and important city. A collection of these Antebellum houses are open for tours and if you pop by the visitor centre when you arrive into town you can find out more about which ones are open. The most notable mansion is Longwood which, due to a number of unforeseen circumstances remains uncompleted to this day!

Gulf Islands National Seashore

Mississippi doesn’t have a huge coastline on the Gulf of Mexico but where it does you’ll find the Gulf Islands National Seashore. This is a protected area of coastline which features some great white, sandy beaches, opportunities for swimming, camping and enjoying the wildlife and flora. There are also sites of historical interest here too.

Unfortunately large parts of the Seashore were damaged during Hurricane Katrina but it is gradually being sorted out. You may find that some areas are still closed.
When Should You Visit?:

The humid subtropical climate of Mississippi makes this a great state to visit all year round. Summers are long and hot, though with the high humidity in the middle of summer (July and August) may be a little too unbearable for some visitors. In Jackson, the July and August average high temperature is 32.7C (91F) and the low is 21C (70F). Winters are short and mild with January being the coolest month with an average high of 12.7C (55F). Late summer and autumn Mississippi may be under risk from hurricanes, so this may not be the best time to visit.
