The main attraction with New Hampshire is the state’s great scenery, making this the perfect place to enjoy outdoor recreation such as hiking, biking, mountaineering and more. But the state does also have some nice cities, which may be good as a base to explore elsewhere.
Concord Concord is the capital city of New Hampshire. This is a nice small city with a fair amount of history as it was first settled back in 1725. Attractions include the New Hampshire State House which was built between 1815 and 1818. Opposite this you’ll find the Eagle Hotel. Although not operating as a hotel any more this is still an important city landmark and has been host to many famous Americans including Richard Nixon, Ulysses S. Grant and Eleanor Roosevelt. The Christa McAuliffe Planetarium is another popular attraction. This was named after the teacher from Concord who died in the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. Manchester The largest city in New Hampshire is Manchester. Having started life as Derryfield, the city was renamed Manchester after the large industrial city in England because this city also was becoming large and industrialised. Tourists may be like to visit the Manchester Historical Society Millyard Museum as this is where the city really began, and features interesting exhibits on the history of the city and an early colonial settlement. Other attractions include the Currier Art Museum. White Mountain National Forest Situated in both New Hampshire and neighbouring Maine, is the White Mountain National Forest. This is a popular area with both tourists and residents and features much great scenery and opportunities for recreation. Mountain biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, swimming and canoeing are just some of the summertime activities to enjoy, while in the winter there is snowshoeing and snowmobiling plus permitted trails for cross country skiing. Mount Washington State Park The Mount Washington State Park is actually situated within the White Mountain National Forest, though the state park is closed during the winter. In the spring and summer you can take a ride on the world’s first mountain cog railway, the Mount Washington Cog Railway, which has been in operation since 1869. There’s a 3 hour round trip up to the summit which includes a 20 minute stop at the top for a chance to look around and admire the views. Also at the top is Tip Top House which was built in 1853 and was the only thing to survive a large fire in 1908. |
