Many visitors to Elizabeth assume that the city was named after Queen Elizabeth I, however it was actually named after the wife of Sir George Carteret and was originally named Elizabethtown. Elizabeth is a historical city as it was founded in 1664 and has served as the capital of the state of New Jersey at one point in its history, and it was also the first English speaking community to be established in the new colony. As you would expect the city does offer some historical attractions but also has a good mix of more modern things to see and do too.
Historic Elizabeth Though there really is much remaining from the very early days of Elizabeth the city does still have some historical buildings standing from numerous points in the city’s history. Across the neighbourhoods you’ll find different examples of architecture – in Midtown for example is the art deco Hersh Tower and Ritz Theatre, while in Elizabethport you’ll see examples of colonial-style architecture. Elizabeth City Hall is a fairly large though charming building, and the clock tower of the Elizabeth Broad Street Train Station is one of the city’s landmarks. Jersey Gardens These days probably the most popular attraction of Elizabeth is Jersey Gardens. This is a huge shopping mall, the largest outlet mall in the state of New Jersey. Set over two floors there are 230 stores and restaurants here, plus a 20 screen cinema complex, a play area for the children and an arcade. Jersey Gardens features many big name stores such as Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Polo, Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie and Fitch, and many more. Because the mall was constructed within an Urban Enterprise Zone it means there’s a reduced rate of sales tax on everything bought from the stores at the mall. This is further incentive to come along and pick up some brand name products at great prices! Right next door to Jersey Gardens is Elizabeth Center whose main attraction is the IKEA store, but there’s also a huge Toys r Us here as well. |
