New Jersey is a state in the north east of the USA, and is considered to be both within the North Eastern and the Mid Atlantic regions of the country. This is the most densely populated state in the whole of the USA, yet it has areas of great scenery, beaches and more to enjoy.

Although New York City is in the state of New York, parts of the metropolitan sprawl of the city make their way into New Jersey too. New Jersey also has a number of its own major cities too, including Trenton (the capital), and Newark (the largest city).
Trenton Trenton is an attractive city which was first settled in the early 1700’s and incorporated in 1792. One of the major features of the city is the beautiful New Jersey State House which has original parts dating right back to the incorporation year. Visitors can tour the building. Other attractions include William Trent House, after whom the city was named and the outdoor art park called Grounds for Sculpture. Newark Newark is the largest city in the state and although it doesn’t have as many interesting attractions as nearby New York this city is actually a good alternative if you like turn of the century architecture. Newark Museum is one of the city’s major attractions as this incorporates a restored 1885 mansion, art galleries, a mini zoo, planetarium and more. Atlantic City Atlantic City is a seaside resort town which was founded primarily as a tourist destination. It’s best known these days for its gambling, but it remains a nice seaside town all the same with boardwalks, beaches, an aquarium, museums and interesting buildings such as one shaped like an elephant! Jersey City The second largest city in New Jersey is Jersey City, just across from Manhattan the downtown area of Jersey City is not hard to miss, and again makes a good alternative to New York City for its historic downtown. New Jersey Recreation Areas New Jersey isn’t just about cities. There’s actually a surprising amount of open space here too. Destinations include Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Gateway National Recreation Area, and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. There are beautiful forests, called the Pine Barrens, which actually covers about a third of the state, and there’s the Jersey Shore and Lake Hopatcong too. |
When Should You Visit?:
The climate in New Jersey is affected by proximity to the Atlantic, the mountains and more so it can vary quite substantially from one end to the other. Generally the climate is classified as being between humid continental and humid subtropical, giving state-wide hot and humid summers and cold winters.
