New Mexico is a state in the American Southwest which retains much of its Spanish and Mexican heritage. There are a large number of both Spanish and English speaking residents here. New Mexico has a lot to offer – from historic towns, to national monuments and national parks.

New Mexico has only one major airport in Albuquerque (airport code: ABQ). Flights to New Mexico from South Africa will be indirect with either one or two stops. Travellers can choose to fly Delta Air Lines which offers one stop-over flights to New Mexico from South Africa via Atlanta. Other airlines such as American Airlines, South African Airways and United Airlines offer travellers flights to New Mexico from South Africa with two stops.

The Tourist Attractions in New Mexico:
Santa Fe

Santa Fe is the capital city of New Mexico. Its claim to fame is being the oldest capital in the country and is also at the highest elevation. The city was founded in 1607 and is not a huge city, but has plenty of attractions. Many museums include the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Palace of the Governors and Rancho de los Golondrinas.

Interesting architecture includes one of the most unusual state capitol buildings as it has been designed to keep in style with the Spanish and Mexican architecture. It’s known locally as the Roundhouse. Also see the attractive St Francis Cathedral. The whole city has many historic buildings and especially during the summer it’s a nice place to simply walk around and enjoy the sites.

Albuquerque

The largest city in New Mexico is Albuquerque, and although there are attractions here most visitors head to Santa Fe first. Attractions include the Albuquerque Biological Park which features a zoo, aquarium and botanical garden. The International Balloon Fiesta is very popular in the autumn and there’s an International Balloon Museum too. The Sandia Peak Tramway takes visitors up Sandia Peak for spectacular views.

Other Towns in New Mexico

Other towns popular with visitors include Roswell, a town which came to fame in 1947 as it was allegedly the site of a crashed UFO, and Los Alamos which is a famous town because this is where Oppenheimer created the world’s first atomic bomb.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Carlsbad Caverns is one of the state’s top tourist attractions. The caverns feature huge cave rooms, which were once thought to be the largest in the world. A cave in Malaysia has now been discovered to have a larger room but Carlsbad is still very impressive. Visitors can go into some of the caves, plus there are ranger led tours available too.

Other National Areas

New Mexico also has several National Monuments. White Sands National Monument has the world’s largest gypsum sand dune and is a beautiful expanse of white sand. Bandelier National Monument in contrast is a rocky area left over from a huge ancient ash flow from a volcano. There are remains of Pueblo settlements here and hiking trails to enjoy. El Malpais National Monument is also the result of volcanic activity, though this landscape was formed by lava flow.
When Should You Visit?:

New Mexico has warm summers and cool to cold winters with some variation across the state in terms of temperatures. Santa Fe, for example has an average high in summer of 30C (86F) in July whilst January is the coldest month with an average low of -9C (15F) and high of 6C (43F). New Mexico is quite a dry state. The wettest months are July and August.
