The state of New York is situated in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, spreading from the Atlantic Ocean coast up to the north and the border with Canada. Often referred to as New York State in order to distinguish it from the New York City, this state is home to many popular tourist destinations including NYC, Long Island, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls.

The majority of international travellers entering New York State will more than likely get a flight to the New York City area, as three of the countries busiest airports are situated here. JFK International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport, although strictly speaking Newark is in the neighbouring state of New Jersey. If you’re taking a flight to New York State from South Africa your best choice is probably going to be JFK Airport. From Johannesburg there are direct flights with United Airlines and South African Airways, or fly with Delta from Cape Town. There are also one stop flights to New York State available with airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, KLM, Air France or Emirates.

The Tourist Attractions in New York State:
When you think of New York State the chances are that the first thing to come to mind will be New York City. Definitely this huge metropolis is one of the USA’s most popular tourist destination and there is plenty here to occupy even the most inquisitive of tourists! But, it should be remembered that there is in fact a great deal more to explore in New York State than just NYC, and here are some of the highlights:

New York City

Starting with the Big Apple, many visitors come to New York City and spend most if not all of their time on Manhattan. Manhattan is home to some of the most iconic structures in the world including the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the New York Stock Exchange plus of course the towering Statue of Liberty out in New York Harbour. Albany

Far smaller than NYC is the city of Albany, the capital of New York State. This is a lovely little city that has plenty of history to offer and has sights such as the New York State Capitol, and the modern performing arts venue called The Egg!

Buffalo

Buffalo is the second largest city in the state of New York and is in the west of the state. It’s a popular tourist destination for its selection of attractions, but is a great gateway to the American side of the world famous Niagara Falls.

The Adirondacks

New York State is not all about cities though as this state has plenty of scenery to enjoy too. The rural Adirondack Mountains are a real contrast to the busy and crowded city streets of Manhattan. You’ll find mountains and many beautiful lakes in this part of the state including the famous Lake Champlain, and Lake Placid.
When Should You Visit?:

New York State is a popular destination at any time of the year as there are benefits to visiting in all seasons. There’s a humid continental climate here that means summers are generally quite warm and humid, but cooler in the northern parts and at elevation. Spring and autumn are generally mild, but winters can be on the cold side, however, visiting NYC in the Christmas season is always a real treat, and there are ski resorts in New York State to visit too!
