Oklahoma is a state situated in both the Southern and South Central regions of the USA and is considered to be a Great Plains state. Though Oklahoma doesn’t immediately spring to mind as a prime tourist destination, the state actually has a surprising amount of attractions on offer.

Oklahoma is served by two international airports: Will Rogers World Airport (airport code: OKC) in Oklahoma City, and Tulsa International Airport (airport code: TUL) in Tulsa. Flights to Oklahoma will be indirect with one or two stops. Delta Air Lines provides one stop flights to Oklahoma from South Africa, via Atlanta. Other airlines such as American Airlines, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and BMI provide flights to Oklahoma from South Africa with two connections.

The Tourist Attractions in Oklahoma:
Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City is the capital and largest city in the state. The city came to the world’s attention in 1995 when a federal building was blown up by a US Army Veteran, killing 168 people. Now one of Oklahoma City’s most visited attractions is the memorial and museum to this event, Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. This attractive memorial consists of the Gates of Time, the Survivor’s Wall with the names of the 800 people who survived the bombing, the Field of Empty Chairs in which there is one chair for each victim, and the Survivor Tree – an American elm which also survived the bombing.

Other things to see around the city include the large and foreboding Oklahoma State Capitol Building, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Myriad Botanical Gardens and the Oklahoma City Zoological Park.

Route 66

Sections of the famous and iconic Route 66 pass through Oklahoma. Although the highway does not officially exist any more, there are still sections of the original road which you can drive on. Many people actually choose to drive the whole route from Chicago to Los Angeles, and find many period attractions along the way!

National Parks Service

Although Oklahoma does not have a ‘National Park’ it does have various areas which come under the protection of the National Parks Service. These include an assortment of different landscapes, from mountains to grasslands.

Chicksaw National Recreation Area is a scenic destination with forests, streams, springs, boating, camping and hiking opportunities. Ouachita National Forest includes much of the Ouachita Mountains and is popular for mountain biking, hiking and horse riding, encompassing the Ouachita National Recreation Trail and Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area.

State Parks

As well as the above there are 50 State Parks in Oklahoma. These include numerous different landscapes and features, such as the waterfall of Natural Falls State Park or the mountain of Quartz Mountain State Park.
When Should You Visit?:

Oklahoma experiences several different climate characteristics. Humid subtropical in the east, pushing towards semi arid, but commonly you’ll find the state is hot during the summer and can be cold in the winter. Also note that Oklahoma is in Tornado Alley and has one of the highest numbers of tornadoes in the world. These can occur all year round though are most common in the spring.
