The Tourist Attractions in Oregon:
Salem

Salem is the capital city and third largest in the state in terms of population. Attractions include the interesting Oregon State Capitol. The art deco design is quite striking, but typical of the period in which it was built (1938). This is actually the third State Capitol, as the first two both burnt down. The city also has museums, such as the Mission Hill Museum and the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, plus some of the oldest buildings in Oregon.

Portland

Portland is the largest city in Oregon and is situated at the northern end of the state. It’s nicknamed the Rose City because it has a high number of rose gardens, particularly the International Rose Test Garden. Other garden attractions include the Japanese Gardens, the Chinese Classical Garden and Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden.

Within Washington Park are many of the city’s attractions including some of the aforementioned gardens, plus Oregon Zoo, Portland Children’s Museum and a number of memorials.

Crater Lake National Park

The only national park in Oregon is Crater Lake National Park. Situated in the Cascade Mountains, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country and very beautiful. Formed with the collapse of Mount Mazama the lake has a striking blue colour. A good way to see the whole lake is to drive the Rim Drive. This is a 33 mile (53 km) long road which encircles the lake and has many great points to stop for views. It’s only open during the summer though.

Willamette National Forest

Within Willamette National Forest is another popular lake, Waldo Lake, where sailing and camping are permitted and snowmobiling is popular in the winter. The National Forest itself is one of the largest in the country and about a fifth of it is designated wilderness area.

Mount Hood and Mount Bachelor

Mount Hood is Oregon’s highest mountain, at 11,239 feet. It is popular in both summer and winter as it has skiing and snowboarding facilities, many hiking trails, lakes and more.

Mount Bachelor is another popular destination in both the summer and winter. It too has skiing and snowboarding on offer in the snowy months, and hiking and outdoor recreation in the summer.

Painted Hills

Within the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is one of the most photographed attractions in Oregon. The Painted Hills are beautifully coloured hills which have resulted from the layers created over numerous geological periods.
When Should You Visit?:

Being situated on the Pacific Ocean, the climate of Oregon is heavily influenced by it and is characterised by mild and sometimes wet weather, especially on the coast. East of the mountains, it can be quite substantially dryer.

Portland, for example, has its warmest month in July with a high of 26C (79F), while January is the coldest month with a high of 7C (46F).
