Rhode Island, which is officially called Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is a state in the New England region of the USA and is the smallest state in the country. Although it doesn’t have a high population (relatively to the other 49 states), Rhode Island has the 2nd highest population density because the state is so small! For tourists, Rhode Island offers attractive, historic towns and over 400 miles (640km) of coastline.

Providence
Providence is the largest city and capital of Rhode Island. The city features attractive architecture, history, museums, nightlife and more. Amongst the impressive buildings is the Rhode Island State House which features the fourth largest self-supporting marble dome in the world. The inside of this 1901 built state house is all very impressive too. Other notable architecture includes the City Hall, built in 1878, as well as the USA’s oldest enclosed shopping mall, dating from 1828, called The Arcade. Nice areas of the city include Federal Hill. It’s one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city and has a strong Italian heritage. As such you’ll find many Italian restaurants, plus streets lined with Victorian mansions. East Greenwich Rhode Island is full of old towns and cities, which are amongst the oldest in the country. East Greenwich is a good example which was established in the 1600’s. Its attractions include the James Mitchell Varnum Mansion, which is a mansion built in 1773 and can be toured to enjoy the furniture and features of the time. Other impressive buildings include the former Kent County Courthouse which is now the East Greenwich Town Hall, the Kentish Guard Armory, the Post Office which was one of the first in the country and the Second Kent County Jail. Other Rhode Island Towns and Cities Amongst the other towns and cities worth visiting is Newport. This was famous for being the home to much of the United States’ elite and this heritage can still be seen in the huge mansions, including the Breakers, the Astor’s Beechwood Mansion and Belcourt Castle. Pawtucket is another attractive city whose main attractions are the Slater Mill Historic Site and the Slater Memorial Park. Rhode Island Coastline With so much coastline, Rhode Island has a great deal of scenic beauty and islands on offer. Block Island is one such island, popular with visitors. This relaxing island is a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, and features many beaches, places to walk and hike, and more. Talking of beaches, Narrangansett is said to have the best beaches in New England, plus other attractions include the Narrangansett Towers, the Indian Head and Point Judith Lighthouse. |
