Columbia
The largest and capital city of South Carolina is Columbia, located in the centre of the state. There are plenty of historic neighbourhoods and buildings to see here. The State House for example is full of history. Construction of this large building began in 1855 but due to problems and the Civil War it wasn’t completed until 1907. It suffered some damage during the Civil War and the points where cannon balls struck are marked with bronze stars. The grounds also feature several interesting memorials. There are numerous large and impressive museums in Columbia including the South Carolina State Museum and the Columbia Museum of Art, plus visitors can tour the Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens. Congaree National Park About 20 miles (32km) outside of Columbia is the Congaree National Park. This is the only national park in South Carolina and its prime purpose is the protection of plant and animal life. It features giant hardwood forests, the Congaree River, creeks and more and diverse wildlife such as bobcats, turkeys, wild pigs, black bears and more. There are hiking trails, plus basic camping sites and canoe trails. Charleston Although Columbia is the largest city and state capital, the city of Charleston is probably better known to many visitors to South Carolina. This city has even more historical heritage on offer as the city was captured with little fight during the Civil War, and hence many of the older buildings remained undamaged. Charleston Museum will tell you more about the city, whilst The Battery is a park with great views, lined with expensive mansions. Fort Sumter is a National Monument and there’s also the State Historic Site of Charles Towne Landing where settlers first arrived. An enjoyable way to see parts of the city is on a carriage tour – horse drawn carriages, which are particularly popular during the summer. South Carolina Beaches and Islands With a long Atlantic Ocean coastline, South Carolina has its share of beaches and Oceanside towns and cities too. Popular destinations include Isle of Palms, Seabrook Island, Garden City and Kiawah Island, but Myrtle Beach is probably the most popular. Attractions here include wide beaches, golfing, shopping, dining, nightlife and more, but be prepared for lots of people in the height of summer! |
