West Valley City is slightly funny in that it’s Utah’s second largest city but it’s actually a suburb of the larger Salt Lake City. This has happened because of both cities expanding to the point where they’ve swallowed each other up!

In reality West Valley City doesn’t have an awful lot to attract the tourist, but this could be a good base from which to explore the neighbouring Salt Lake City. Accommodation may be more affordable and easier to come by in West Valley City.
Before you head over to Salt Lake City though check out what’s going on during your stay in West Valley City. The city has a selection of venues for events and sports, so you may find there’s something happening that interests you. The venues to check on include the E Center which is home to the Utah Grizzlies who play ice hockey. You’ll also find the Utah Cultural Celebration Center here in West Valley City as well as the Rocky Mountain Raceway, and an amphitheatre and theatre. If you enjoy golf there are two golf courses in West Valley City – Stonebridge Golf Course, and Westridge Golf Course. Probably the city’s top attraction though is the Valley Fair Mall. This is a large shopping mall that currently has about 120 stores and a food court, plus a multiplex cinema. You’ll find big names like Macy’s and JCPenney here. Work in underway on an extension to the current mall that will provide even more stores and entertainment. When you’ve shopped ‘til your heart’s content, head over to Salt Lake City and take in some of the sights there. Salt Lake City is best known for being the home of the Mormons, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, and not surprisingly there are numerous church related attractions. Temple Square is the top place to visit and though non-Mormons are not allowed inside the temple itself, the outside is still very impressive. Salt Lake City is also well known for the salt lake that gave the city its name. You can visit Great Salt Lake State Park and Marina and look out for wildlife or enjoy a spot of sailing. Outdoor recreation is very popular in this area throughout the year. You may remember that Salt Lake City was home of the 2002 Winter Olympics, and skiing is one of the top attractions. |
