The Tourist Attractions in Virginia:
Towns and Cities

Virginia has a variety of different sized towns and cities, many very attractive and popular with tourists. Amongst these is the state capital, Richmond, which was first settled in 1607 by an English settler, and the historic downtown area is full of history. For more history there are numerous museums in Richmond concentrating on periods in the city’s, and the state’s, past such as the Museum of the Confederacy, the White House of the Confederacy and the American Civil War Center. The Virginia State Capitol is also a popular landmark, and was designed by Thomas Jefferson.

Virginia Beach is the largest city in the state and is also a popular beachside resort town. In addition to the large beach, attractions include the Cape Henry Lighthouse, the Old Coastguard Station, Mount Trashmore, the Virginia Aquarium, and Ocean Breeze Waterpark. There are also state parks here – First Landing State Park, False Cape State Park, plus Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Other interesting towns and cities in Virginia include Fredericksburg, which has several links to George Washington; and Williamsburg, with its history, museums and plantations.

Shenandoah National Park

Virginia’s only national park is Shenandoah, situated within the famous Blue Ridge Mountains. Ease of access helps to make this one of the most visited national parks in this part of the USA, and the most popular attraction here is the drive along Skyline Drive.

Skyline Drive is a National Scenic Byway and runs for 105 miles (168km) through the park. It’s the only public road through the park, and hence the best way to get to see Shenandoah. As well as being an enjoyable drive there are many points of interest for you to stop at along the way. Visitors don’t have to stay in their cars, as there are also over 500 miles (800km) of hiking trails throughout the park too.

Great Falls Park

Another popular destination is Great Falls Park. There’s lots of scenery here including the Great Falls of the Potomac River, which give the park its name. Also of interest are the remains of the Patowmack Canal, which was the first canal in the United States to use locks.
When Should You Visit?:

Virginia’s climate is variable because of the changes in elevation from sea level to mountains, to valleys. Parts of the Atlantic Coast have a humid subtropical climate, for example. The average temperatures across the whole of Virginia range from highs of 28C (83F) to 30C (86F) in the summer (July to August). January is the coldest month with an average high of 7.7C (46F) and an average low of -3C (26F).
