The state is often referred to as Washington State, or the State of Washington, in order to differentiate it from the city of Washington in the District of Columbia, the capital of the USA, which happens to be right on the other side of the country!
Washington State offers visitor a great deal of beautiful scenery in its mountains and coastlines as well as very popular cities and laid back residents! Seattle The largest city in Washington State, and indeed in the whole of the Pacific Northwest region, Seattle has many interesting attractions. During the summer this is great city to walk around and soak up the coastal atmosphere, drink some coffee (perhaps Starbucks, as this is their home!), and people watch. When you’ve drunk enough coffee, attractions include the Space Needle; Seattle’s most famous landmark. The Space Needle is a tower with an observation deck which gives amazing views of the city and the Olympic and Cascades Mountains on a clear day. Also visit Seattle Aquarium, Seattle Art Museum, the Museum of Flight, and numerous city parks. Olympia Although not as popular with tourists visiting Washington State as nearby Seattle is, Olympia is the State Capital and has some places of interest. The views from Olympia are quite something, such as Mount Rainier. There’s also the Washington State Capitol Building, and the scenery of Puget Sound to enjoy too. National Parks in Washington State Washington State features three National Parks – Mount Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic, and all three are mountain related! In addition there are two National Monuments, plus numerous Wilderness areas, National Recreation Areas and National Forests. Mount Rainier National Park encompasses the whole of Mount Rainier, a stratovolcano. Mountain climbing is popular, as is the general scenery which includes glaciers, snowfields, waterfalls and more. North Cascades National Park isn’t as popular as Rainier, but the scenery is just as spectacular, then there’s Olympic National Park which is the most popular of the three in Washington State. This park features stunning coastlines, mountains and rainforest! |
