West Virginia is nicknamed the Mountain State, because it’s the only state in the country to be entirely situated within a mountain range, this being the Appalachians. Opportunities for enjoying the great scenery of the state are abound, plus there are vibrant and attractive cities too.
Charleston Charleston is the capital and largest city in West Virginia. This is a beautiful city, located where the Elk and Kanawha Rivers meet. The State Capitol Building is amongst the sites here, and it features the largest state capitol dome in the country, which is covered in gold leaf. The state capitol complex also includes several more of Charleston’s attractions: the Governor’s Mansion, Holly Grove Mansion, and the Cultural Center, in addition to an assortment of historical statues around the grounds. To start enjoying some of the scenery which West Virginia is famous for, visitors to Charleston can go to the Kanawha State Forest, which has camping, hiking trails, biking, horse riding trails and more. Harpers Ferry In the far north eastern corner of West Virginia is Harpers Ferry. This picturesque town is said to be the state’s most popular tourist attraction as it was a major Civil War site. The whole of this small town is situated within the Harpers Ferry National Historic Park. Historic buildings and picturesque scenery are what makes this so popular today. Monongahela National Forest A great place to see more of West Virginia’s natural beauty is within the Monongahela National Forest. This forest covers an area of 900,000 acres which includes wilderness areas, small communities, and more. The main attraction is the fact there are over 500 miles (800km) of hiking trails here. Other activities include mountain climbing, camping, fishing, wildlife and bird watching, whitewater rafting, boating, and horseback riding. Seneca Rocks and Spruce Falls are also within the Monongahela National Forest. Seneca Rocks are 900 feet high rock formations, popular with climbers and for the view from the viewing platform, whilst Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia, where an observation tower gives amazing views. |
When Should You Visit?:
With its changes in elevations, West Virginia experiences a humid subtropical to humid continental climate. This generally means you’ll experience hot and humid summers, with winters varying from warm to cold, depending on the elevation. Charleston, for example, has its hottest average temperatures in July, with a high of 29.5C (85F), and low of 17C (63F). January is the coldest month with an average high of 6C (43F) and low of -4.4C (24F).
