Wyoming is the 10th largest state in the US, but it’s the least populated of them all meaning visitors will find vast empty areas here. Although this may not sound like much fun, Wyoming’s vast empty areas are actually full of some of the country’s best scenery. The population of the state may only be around 533,000 people, but many thousands of visitors every year help to fill the state out!
Cheyenne Cheyenne is both the state capital and largest city of Wyoming. This is a historic city which was founded in 1867, and features a good variety of historic buildings and things to see. Amongst these is the Wyoming State Capitol Building, which is open for tours on weekdays, plus the Historic Governor’s Mansion. The Cheyenne Botanic Gardens are popular, as is the Old West Museum and Store. Casper Wyoming’s second largest city, and home of the state’s only international airport, is Casper. As second largest state cities go, Casper is really quite small, and may serve better simply as a gateway to the rest of Wyoming. Jackson and Jackson Hole Jackson Hole is probably better known than the town of Jackson, but both are situated in Northwest Wyoming. Jackson itself is an attractive small town with small museums, art galleries, and opportunities for enjoying whitewater rafting and other sports. Jackson Hole is the name of the world famous ski resort here. National Parks of Wyoming Wyoming has two of the most popular national parks in the United States, Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and both are situated not far from Jackson. Yellowstone National Park is mostly situated in Wyoming, though a smaller portion of the park spreads into neighbouring Idaho and Montana. This was the world’s first national park, and hence the USA’s oldest, best known for its geysers, like Old Faithful and the Grand Geyser. This is a large park with different areas to it, each with their own attractions, so it’s worth spending several days here at least. Waterfalls, Mammoth Hot Springs, Fort Yellowstone, and more, all contribute to making this park one of the most visited in the country. Grand Teton National Park features some of the most amazing mountain scenery in the country. This park is literally just outside Jackson, so very accessible for visitors. Attractions include the beautiful vistas, hiking, lakes, camping and historic buildings. Devil’s Tower National Monument Visitors who are familiar with the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind will recognise this large hunk of rock as the monolith which featured so prominently in the film! The rock is quite spectacular, and in recent years climbing it has grown in popularity. |
